If you run any kind of facility involved in manufacturing, storage, or anything else, you want your "_ days since last accident" sign to never go back to zero. One of the most important ways to maintain an industrial facility is by cleaning and protecting your floor from damage. In fact, a clean floor is so associated with safety and efficiency that your appearance rating could dip by as much as 75% if your floor just looks like it's not clean. Since keeping your floor damage-proof is so important, here are a few steps you can take to protect your business.
It's easier to keep your floors clean if they never get dirty in the first place. Make sure you have floor matting on both sides of every entrance to the building. Further adding them to high-traffic areas — near steps and elevator shafts, for instance — can also limit the amount of dust and dirt that covers the facility floor.
As with anything else in your facility, you'll need a regular program of floor maintenance. These are low-tech solutions that will keep any problems with the floor from building up over time, and keep it looking fresh for any potential clients who might be passing through. Mop the floors — first dry, and then wet — to keep any standing dust to a minimum. Once all dirt and grit has been removed, use a low-speed buffer on your floors. To assist in the repair of your floor, consider using a spray buff. If you go this route, make sure you have a pad that's appropriate for spray buffing. While more expensive than a low-speed buffer, a high-speed burnisher is still the best way to keep the floor looking its finest. Every floor is different, so it's critical that you use the appropriate finish for the type of floor, and for the level of maintenance you require.
To get your floor back to 100% cleanliness and shine, it will need to be re-coated. The frequency of re-coating is totally up to you, but it's necessary to prevent your floor from sustaining any long-term damage. If you can use an auto-scrubber to deep clean the floor, that's ideal. After a fresh water rinse, you'll need to apply three to five layers of protective finish. Applying thin, even coats, ensures a safe and attractive floor with the requisite shine, but follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to best apply the product.
